After the Car is a site-specific installation by Rachel Simmons inspired by her duplex home in Savannah, GA. The piece is made up of two canvas walls and a canvas floor, which are painted light blue. A bed with gray sheets is positioned in the corner where the two canvas walls meet. There is also the cast shadow of a window on the floor in the center of the piece, but no window in the wall. Dark painted footprints lead to the bed and then away from it, with the silhouette of a curled-up body beside the bed.
The installation contextualizes anxiety in a home environment. Simmons based the piece on her memory of coming home to an empty household while experiencing an anxiety attack. The absence of furniture further highlights the prints on the floor, demonstrating the encompassing nature of anxiety.
